The bees were carrying Owen face up, and he had to roll his head around or bend it all the way back to see where they were going, and it was disorienting having to see upside down.
The flowers passed below, a lake of marigolds and violets and buttercups and roses, and the aroma was strong even up here. Yet for all this beauty, sweat and goosebumps broke out all over Owen. What was going to happen once they met the queen? Would they be executed? Perhaps even stung to death? And what would happen to Duncan, roaming across Silius Island on his own? Would he be able to take care of a foxcat if one jumped into his path? Or something worse?
What horrified Owen the most was the possibility of the bees killing Wanda, of her dying as a mass of swollen bee-stung flesh. Her parents might go the rest of their lives never knowing what happened to their child and grandchild. If it came to that, Owen would take every last one of those stings if it meant Wanda and her son could return home safely instead.
